And I don't say that just because they left off several movies I certainly would have included. I could see the ACADEMY nominating "Seabiscuit" and "Master and Commander," but critical consensus is at best "warm" on those two movies (a historic tearjerker and a historic routine action- pic). Same will probably be true of "Last Samurai." You can bet "Finding Nemo" will probably make more top ten lists than any movie released yet (obviously "ROTK" will probably eventually dominate that category, whether it deserves it or not), yet it's not there. Of course, it's not like the NBR is real critics' group anyway. Their existence puzzles me to some extent. That said, they're almost the only critic/industry group that recognized the genius of "Quills," so I can't say too many bad things about them.
I had a chance to see "In America" on Tuesday and put an end to that controversy in my mind, but I chose to see it at a later date in favor of "Honey." God knows what I was thinking other than "I need at least one more movie to fill up my bottom 10 for the year!" As a result of skipping "In America" this week, I have to skip "House of Sand and Fog" next week, so it'll be around Christmas at the earliest for me to put out a top 10 list (however, at the moment I don't have a "Big Fish" screening scheduled -- everything else will be done before Christmas that could conceivably pop up on top 10 lists, except that one, which has me a bit concerned). "Girl with a Pearl Earring," "My Life Without Me" and "21 Grams" are all on the pre-Christmas list. The only other "big deal" that's missing is "The Company," and we all know what I think of the average Altman film. This thing sounds like "Gosford Park" with ballet or "M.A.S.H." with ballet or "Popeye" with ballet. Okay, just kidding about that last one!
