"Two Towers" was 97%, "The Pianist" 94%, "Chicago" 87%. Admittedly, "Gangs" and "The Hours" were a lot more divisive than "M&C," but "Gangs" was much more "epic" than "M&C" (plus Scorsese's more important than Weir) and "The Hours" had the Academy's more intellectual members behind them. The Critical Consensus for once was especially telling: "Gangs" was 6th, "Two Towers" 8th, and "Chicago," "The Pianist" and "The Hours" 11-13 -- all in the top 15. (How "Gangs" was 6th is beyond me.)
I just really don't think the "Hollywood elite" or the "elite critics" feels as if "M&C" is the next sign from God. But maybe I'm misinterpretting their responses.
This is such a weak year, anything could really happen.
