...women are more self-sufficient. In the past when women didn't work outside of the home or have their own careers, they were dependant upon their husbands for support. Even if the marriage was horrible (ie, he beat the crap out of her on a regular basis or cheated incessantly), she was pretty much stuck with him due to the fact that she didn't have any way to support herself and/or kids if she left.
Now that women are pulling in their own income with which they could live on their own if they had to makes them less likely to put up with abuse/cheating than in past generations. And, in turn, alimony is becoming less and less popular, for reasons of not being necessary or just plain pride. The latter having been more important to me than the former at the time of my divorce...
