Bee Movie Mr. Cranky's rating:
Say, anybody else notice all the B's in Barry's name and that he's actually a bee? So fucking clever that Seinfeld. I don't really know if Jerry Seinfeld is that similar to Larry David as a personality or if he's simply cultivated that image as a result of the success of "Seinfeld", but if your idea of fun is to hear whininess coming out of an animated bee well, "Bee Movie" is for you. Let's face it, Jerry Seinfeld playing Jerry Seinfeld, animated bee, is just not a good idea. After about five minutes, you expect bee Kramer and Bee Elaine to come out of the hive. I just can't emphasize enough how this is not a good thing. Yet, it's very interesting from a cultural standpoint. People loved "Seinfeld" and are desperate for anything "Seinfeld", but co-opt that memory in any way (say, creating animated bee Seinfeld, for instance) and those same fans will line up to urinate on your corpse. Keep in mind too that Jerry Seinfeld wrote this thing. There are jokes, but the story is awful. When animated bees go to court, things have just gone in a direction for a child's film that they should simply never go. Seinfeld actually thinks that kids will find it funny when the bees litigate a case over the ownership of their honey. I don't know about anybody else, but I haven't found court remotely funny since "My Cousin Vinny" and even that turned into the "Marisa Tomei won an Oscar for what?" fiasco. So, Barry B. Benson (Seinfeld) finally gets out of the hive and meets a florist, Vanessa (Renee Zellweger), then decides to go to court to regain control of honey production. Say, anybody else notice all the B's in Barry's name and that he's actually a bee? So fucking clever that Seinfeld. Anyway, that leads to massive plant death in NYC and the realization that bees and humans need each other. Come to think of it, maybe Bee Kramer would have actually added something to this movie.
Was it really that bad?
