11/30/07: 97k is peanuts in NYC

I made more than that and still had little discretionary income. Of course, income taxes (combined federal, state, and city) took about 40% and rent was about 25k, so those are pretty big hits right there. Frankly, I couldn't imagine living in Manhattan on less than 6 figures, and you'd need probably 200k or more to have a family.
