02/21/08: Rating as marketing tool

Posted by: Otm_Shank

I see a lot of ads nowadays for horror films that do not look kid-safe, but have PG-13 ratings. The only horror films that get an R anymore are really over-the-top stuff like Hostel and Saw. It's not just a coincidence that the audience for horror films is relatively young. A film like Pollock has an older audience already, so nobody really cares about the rating.

Robert Altman said that he *wanted* his films to get an R because he didn't think children would understand them. (Popeye being an exception, I assume?) Makes sense--I know some adults who scratched their heads over Nashville.
