I have two observations concerning this:
1. I bought my first computer, a 386sx, 80 meg HD, 4 meg RAM, 256K video memory, etc. in 1991... there's never been anything go wrong w/ it that I couldn't fix myself... zero $$$$ spent on parts or service... I did have to re-format/re-partition the hard drive once, but that was all... my daughter is still using it at college as her only computer... and she perfers running it in DOS mode (Word Perfect 5.1 for DOS) because it is so much faster than Windows... and faster printing than her roomie's iMac...
2. For people that really stress their computer for games or CAD or whatever, you have to replace them every 2 - 3 years anyway to keep up w/ the latest software upgrades and hardware advances... who'd of thought even 3 years ago that the AVERAGE machine would have 96 - 128 meg RAM, 5 - 15 Gig hard drive, 8 meg video RAM, etc... not even mentioning DVD, kick ass scanners cheap...
in computer heaven... .tom
