Hi!
Yes, I guess your phrase "realistic lesbian movie" was a bit confusing.
Yeah, I know H.C. was based on a true story. The real-life women (one of them is author Anne Perry) deny ever having a lesbian relationship, however.
I guess I was under the impression that one of the themes of the thread was movies that realistically potray the lesbian experience. (this, too, is unlikely, as "lesbians" are not really a unified whole and cannot be defined in the sense of collective experience.) but i meant that i could RELATE to some instances of "Better than Chocolate", being a lesbian myself. i could relate to some of their experiences AS lesbians. i could not say the same thing for Heavenly Creatures. The Incredibly True Adventures of 2 Girls in Love, Go Fish, Claire of the Moon (mind-numbingly awful), High Art - all of these are "realistic" in the literary sense. They attempt to mirror reality, however they might fail in doing so. I think they are all more realistic than the wack-jobs in Heavenly Creatures, though. Yes, based on a true story, but still undeniably a work of fiction, which is always an altered truth.
Lesbians aside, I still could never call HC a "realistic movie." I know it was BASED on a true story, but talking clay figures, enormous floating butterflies, and sex with a personal vision of Orson Welles, does not really seem realistic. But that's just me. But then, what is reality? what is truth? why am i wandering off into existentialist angst-y musings? Why am I typing this when I'm supposed to be reading for class tomorrow?? Who knows?
BTW, nice to meet you. I used to come to this site a lot, but don't really any more since I've been so busy with school and work and all that fun stuff. I don't think I've seen you around. So - it's good to meet you and have a nice night.
Nicole :)
