Yeah, well, I only do it when someone gets really annoying, spoiling my entertainment of the movie (unless it's a really big, beefy guy carrying a six-pack in which case I would just switch seats I guess). The point is not to let them make you lose your temper. When they make sufficient noise, I just formally ask 'if they would mind'. In the case of this woman I really wanted her to shut up because she was an example of someone who gets worse with every second if they aren't halted instantly (you know, just like with dogs or noisy kids).
In Holland, the general unfriendly response to my inquiry (less noise please) is: 'Hey I paid for this movie too, you know.' HAHAHA. Really funny, because then I annoy the hell out of them answering: 'Well I paid for it too, but not to listen to your crap!' Please remember that I never get into real fights, just fiendish arguments. Most times the other side gets so annoyed by the whole conversation they eventually comply. It should be made lawful to shoot any disturbants of the peace in a theater when a movie is playing, but that's just my opinion.
A point about Surround Sound in a theatre: when I was watching 'Star Wars Special Edition' and came to the point where Stormtroopers are knocking on the door where 3-PO and R-2 are hiding ('Open up, open up!<BANG BANG>) I actually was disturbed and looked to my left, thinking someone was knocking on the emergency-exit from the outside. It was just the 'spectacular sound of the movie!
