01/24/02: An interesting day at the dead dot-com auctions.

Posted By: ModernRonin

So, one of the dot-coms that went belly up in Boulder had a fairly large auction today. I spent all day there looking at the oscilloscopes, microchip making equipment, and... cheap PCs.

I really wanted to get a 933 MHz PIII (they were going for about $500 for the box only) but I had to settle for an 800 MHz. I also got a 19" monitor (Viewsonic, I think?). In the "why the fuck did I bid for this" department, I also bought a 233Mhz/64 meg RAM/4 gig HD/15" monitor system for $200. Not a bad deal there, I think. The 800 MHz system was $400, and the 19" monitor was $275. After tax and auctioneer's comission it came out to almost exactly $1,093. Which I suppose isn't too terrible for two complete systems, even if that 15" monitor sucks goat choad. And this is probably money I can't really afford to spend since I'm unemployed now. Still, it'll be nice to have a machine faster than my current Pentium 1 90 MHz (not kidding - this machine I use for everyday stuff is nearly 6 years old).

If you're looking for a new machine on a budget, this may be the way to go if you've got ungodly patience and have iron control over your impulses. I'm not kidding when I said I spent all day there. Got there at 11 just as the auction started and didn't leave until 6. The site of the company that does these auctions is http://www.cowanalexander.com
