Major correction, dingleberry. President Bush the Elder sent in the Marines to ensure that food and other humanitarian aid actually reached the people of Somalia rather than going into the pockets of warlords like Aidid. This they did.
President Billy Bob Clinton, while proclaiming his desire to negotiate with Aidid et al, sent in the Army Special Ops troops (i.e. Rangers and Delta Force) to try and kidnap Aidid and his lieutenants. Oh, he also kinda refused the Army's request for armored detachments to support the Special Ops boys if they got into trouble.
However, the fact that they then got into trouble....well, that was the result of bad tactical planning by the Army. The General kinda screwed the pooch when he assumed the Somali technicals would always do just what the Army wanted them to do. Ooops.
