I get this a lot.
Short answer is, it depends. Obviously, if you are funny, you are funny, and if your ambition is to be a stand-up comedian, I'd say open mike night and watching professionals is more than enough. I don't think you'd want to leverage yourself on a career doing this without some ground work; don't buy a Ferrari because you'll be a famous comedian and expect to keep the payments up with your future stand-up success without actually playing some clubs and getting some laughs.
That was a joke, btw. No straight standup person I know drives a Ferrari.
Anyway, if you ambition is to hit movies, I'd seriously recommend a university with a reasonable drama department. This can also help your delivery a little bit. I believe I profited enormously from my collegiate experience.
Overall I think everyone with the opportunity should go to college--not because they'll learn stuff in the classroom, but because living on campus with a bunch of people your age teaches you a lot about life. It's absolutely essential, IMO, if you want to do any acting; if you'd rather be Richard Jeni, you can get along without it.
And there's lots of scholarship money out there for the taking. A friend of mine put himself through school with about 100 hours of work a year. Two weekends, he'd do nothing but look up scholarships and apply. He wasn't a particularly good student, and he wasn't a minority either, but he made out like a bandit while other guys I knew worked Little Caesar's 30 hours a week to make ends meet.
Thanks
