Granted, he hadn't made a movie in 20 years, but he leaves behind a major mark on American movie history. In a time when movies were incredibly silly, Wilder made them thoughtful. In a time when most actors and actresses sounded and looked pretty much the same, Wilder casted different-looking and different-sounding actors and actresses. In a time when Hollywood was extremely self-absorbed with its silliness and taking it seriously, Wilder spoofed it.
Plus, he pretty much gave us Marilyn Monroe...
