I think it is best to watch the release version, and then the director's cut of the movie. There is more than the 'four second' insert into the film for the director's cut. The question of Deckhart as a replicant more than deals with Cranky's oedipal question (intriguing though it is) with the concept of implanted (and possibly shared) memory, which goes back to Deckhart's questioning of Rachael at Tyrell headquarters.

This film is very significant, especially from a visual point of view (how many films since Blade Runner have looked similar, from Dark Rain to Dark City?), and also as another Phillip K Dick adaptation. 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' is important reading to understand this film, of how Scott successfully brings across the hopelessness of the book, of a mankind doomed even on his homeworld.
