I don't think the first one would have been as successful as it was had it not been for all the hype, particularly the website which got billions of hits and perpetuated the "documentary" angle. I didn't think it was all that great. Different, yes, great, no.
The second one makes the first one look like a cinematic masterpiece. Bad acting (except for the sheriff who's the best thing in the movie), stupid script, okay direction, crappy ending. But not bad enough to be "good" bad.
