09/26/00: I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

"Warm Fuzzy fealing? I never go to a movie for that. If I want a warm fuzzy feeling, I scratch my cat's chin."

I was responding to your complaint that you never felt "connected" to the characters, and didn't care what happened to them. So did you want to, or not?

"Run from a woman with an obvious need for 'nair? Actually, I'm nuts enough to try talking to her first, UNLESS she's wielding a Knife or a chain saw. . . Floating above the ground? I might ask her A) does she know B) how does it work and C) can she teach me. OK, so I'm a little nuts. . ."

That's very easy for you to say right now, sitting in your comfy chair in a safe place. I am of the opinion that no one can really be sure how they will react to a frightful situation until they are in said situation.

"Not everyone is given to profanity when scared. When scared, I'm too busy finding a way out of the problem to waste energy and effort on pointless explitives."

You're right, not everyone is. However, you go on to say you'd be too busy looking for a solution to use that kind of language. . .What if you had been looking for a way out of the woods for three days, only to end up right back where you started? Again, I don't feel it's possible to say "This is how I would act in this situation", because you've never BEEN in this situation (I am assuming yu've never been terrorized over the course of several days by a supernatural entity). I have a feeling I'd be saying a lot of fucks, but I can't say that with certainty.

"Nature film might have been more
interesting. The leaves were pretty."

That they were.

"From what I remember of the movie (and I admit freely that I'm trying to forget), they cut back and forth in and out of interviews at the beginning. In fact, they seem to cut in and out of the same interview a couple of times. This to me is not realistic. It shows signs of editing. I thought this was supposed to be "Unedited" footage."

Heather actually interviews several people throughout the film. . .The woman with the baby at the beginning, as well as a couple of younger people (at least one girl and one guy). She also talks to an older gentleman who tells her the story of Russel Parr. Heather chit-chats with two guys fishing, who send her to Mary, the woman who says she actually had an encounter with the witch (the source of the "dark hair" tidbit). If your only complaint about this is the editing, then forget it. The forward says that someone has "found their footage", not that they have left it untouched. I mean, face it, they're in the woods for several days, and we end up with about 90 minutes of movie. I think it is unrealistic of you to assume that every moment they spent in the woods was on film. We didn't watch them sleep or anything.

"Spectacle: it is a very broad term. "eyecandy" is only a tiny portion of spectacle. Perhaps "Scope" or "Importance" or even "Lesson" would be better. . . My point? I don't need to see the witch. I need to be interested in the movie. If I'm not, I look at the situation: Did I fail, or did the Movie fail. In this case, I have to say that the Movie failed."

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. You sounded disappointed in your last post at the lack of a "spectacle" in BWP, perhaps I misunderstood you. As far as "lessons" go, in the interview Heather does with the two fishermen, the first thing one of them says is "You damn fool kids will never learn." I'd say Heather and Mike learned their lesson not to mess with forces beyond their comprehension - although, they learned it a little too late!

"Not an objective analysis? Of course not. How can anyone be objective about something they didn't like. The best we can do is come up with non-subjective grounds for commentary."

When I said yours was not an objective analysis, I was talking about your first viewing of the movie. My point was that you went in with expectations, and the movie did not deliver. Those expectations are what made your opinion "biased" or "corrupted", if you will. If you didn't like the movie, well and good, but if you didn't like the movie because you thought it would be different, that's another story. I know that in discussing the film's merits, it's important to try to remain as impartial as possible. I'm not sure you seem able to do that, but then again, I'm not sure I am able to do that either!

To each his own, I suppose.
