The global temperatures *did* fall. That was due to the Mt. Pinatubo explosion shooting tons of dust into the atmosphere and reflecting light from the sun back into space.

Again, the most reliable data we have are not air temperature samples (which are still remarkably accurate) but ground samples from ice cores and permafrost data.
