I like this movie. I really do. But Mel, you were so obsessed with getting in a tragic love story with lots of blood and gore to keep the men interested that you left out lots of historical fact. Gripe #1) There was no damn princess until about two years after the death of Wallace. And at that, though the prince was gay (and so was his dad, mind you), he actually loved her quite a lot and they had a very happy marriage and lots of babies. Gripe #2) England won! A couple of years after the death of Robert the Bruce, England just kind of took over because the petty Scottish nobles were too busy fighting over the crown to notice that England had crept in, crushed the laymen into submission, and stolen the Stone of Scone, the symbol of the Scottish monarchy. In fact, they've kept it for centuries; they just gave it back about ten years ago, now that the Scots no longer care. so what, we get a fucking rock. Now how 'bout fixing the lousy economy? Gripe #3) None of those Scottish weapons exist save the swords, and they forgot the favorite weapons of the English. Mel was so busy making the Scots into heroes and making the English look like bumbling fools that he forgot to look into any historical or militaristic fact.
Why, oh, why won't anyone research anything anymore? The movie was visually astounding and the story gripping, but it leaves so much to be desired in the end.
