I think there's a very cynical attitude out there that works on this kind of logic:
Person X espouses viewpoint Y
Person X is a hypocrite
Therefore, Y is wrong or irrelevant or anyone who espouses
Y is a hypocrite
This logical fallacy is known by various names: invalid generalization, stereotyping, biased sample, etc.
Failure by individual people to live up to an ideal they espouse doesn't invalidate the ideal itself, and it doesn't mean that everybody who espouses the ideal fails to live up to it.
