Waitressing may be considered menial labor, but I made more money per hour as a waitress than I do now as a teacher.
Not that everything is about money, but it's the reason there are so many lifer waitresses. And lifer waitress = old, thick-skinned bitch, who can't or won't depend on some man to give her a reasonably comfortable life.
