...maybe they felt she truly deserved a nomination (and she does) but felt that since she's a kid, her chances are better in the supporting category. In a sense, it's much like nominating Ethan Hawke for Best Supporting Actor for Training Day even though he actually had more screen time than Denzel Washington.
Whatever the category, I hope she wins.
