No place outside the university? Been to a poetry slam lately? There's some decent stuff out there (some dreck also, of course).
I don't know what you mean by poetry being seen as decadent - contemporary poetry or the old stuff.
Mostly, people are simply afraid of poetry/literature because of the poor way the initial encounters were made - usually from teachers who get so tangled up in the mechanics that they lose the meaning. Literature and poetry are the human condition, distilled. Great writing lasts because it's both vast and intimate - we see ourselves in it.
But that's my standard new-quarter speech.
