Yes. So many of us writers prefer to exist as undiscovered geniuses. It's painful, but less painful than being critically judged and perhaps found wanting.
How accessible does writing have to be? If a writer wants to produce prose or poetry for private consumption, then certainly no one is hurt - except the inbred writer himself, who's unlikely to grow in his craft or sullen art.
Do your writer friends even consider publishing? Do they read their work publicly? Do they cling to the role of misunderstood prophet?
Yet you say they might be geniuses - why?
