10/30/00: This is really a good film, in my opinion...

You can't set out to make a classic movie. The creative process either works or it doesn't; it isn't up to the filmmakers entirely. The fact is, they didn't set out to make this movie as great as it is, and if they had, it wouldn't have been a tenth as good. This was a throwaway adventure movie that came together perfectly, and unexpectedly so. It is the unselfconscious way in which this classic just somehow happened that distinguishes it from intended classics like "Gone With The Wind". That and its top-notch cast, with Humphrey Bogart, one of the very greatest of all leading men, at the very pinnacle of his form.
