They're still fun to watch though and it sometimes can be intellectually interesting to listen to the philosophical monologues of each of the characters.
But it's real easy to get lost, because often the jumps in the philosophical logic aren't always explained and it's up to the audience to connect the dots (if it's at all possible). One moment you'll see the anime hero blowing things up, massacring enemy troops and just basically pwning anyone who dares to stand against him... the next scence will either be the same anime hero or some other character going off into some deep and cryptic emotional- philosophical tangent and it's not always obvious what the hell is being talked about. (NB: And I like philosophy!)
Makes me wonder if Japanese anime cartoonists are just uber-emo and wrapped up in some complex emotional state they want to share with the rest of the world but can't be bothered explaining.
