01/04/01: Weirdness knows no Party label.

Posted By: MAYORBOB

Just caught two stories in the paper this morning that caught my eye. Both involve a certain degree of lunacy...one of them is a Republican and the other is a Democrat. First for the Republican.

Tom Alciere conducted a lowkey campaign and won a seat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. With the election behind him, he admitted to a reporter that the news that a police officer is killed makes him happy. He connects this opinion with his opposition to the war on drugs. He also espoused that women need to be "dragged by the hair and beat with a bat" occassionally to keep them in line.

He said his views on the police and his lessons in love never came up during the campaign because, "nobody ever asked me." He said that he intends to serve out his term in office despite the urging of the Republican Party that he resign. Needless to say, the police in New Hampshire (state motto -- "Live Free or Die"), are crying for this guy's removal. New Hampshire law has no provisions for removal of a legislator.

He also attributed his victory in the polls to his being elected by a "bunch of fat, stupid, ugly old ladies that watch soap operas, play bingo, read tabloids and don't know the metric system. The same lamebrains who vote for politicians who are WRONG finally voted for one who is RIGHT."

His victory came during his fourth try for office. He lost once before as a Democrat and twice as a Libertarian.

Now for the Democrat:

The weirdly coiffed and even more weirdly acting Democratic Representative James Traficant of Ohio held to a long- standing pledge to do something weird by voting for Dennis Hastert to continue as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Traficant, a longtime favorer of strange and unusual hair styles and polyester suits, has established a legislative record remarkable for the number of mind-bending, obtuse harrangues on the floor of the House invariably ended by him uttering his trademark phrase, "beam me up". Traficant is also still battling a corruption investigation by the Justice Department.

His vote was greeted by House Republicans with a standing ovation for his bipartisan spirit. His vote was greeted by House Democrats with a standing ovation, likely because they were glad to be rid of this loose cannon on deck.
