Last year, I was watching the television show "20/20." They showed a black woman who had started her own business. She braided people's hair. Her customers were very happy with the service that they received. The business was getting new customers. Previous customers kept coming back for repeat business. The customers were very happy. This woman was working very hard to improve the quality of her life. She was climbing up the economic ladder. She was living the American dream. She was a good role model. She was a hero.
But then something terrible happened. Some government officials came by and told her that because she did not have a license, her business was illegal. In order to get a license, she would have to spend $5,000 to take nine months of classes at beauty school. These classes had absolutely nothing to do with braiding hair. The woman did not have an extra $5,000, and could not afford to take nine months off of work. So, the government shut down her business.
Basically, the government officials said to her, "Your life does not belong to you. You do not own your life. We, the government, own your life. We, the government, will decide what you can and cannot do. We, the government, will make all of your decisions for you. We are the government, and we know what is best."
If I ever met that woamn, I would tell her something else. I would say to her, "Those government officials are wrong. What they said was wrong. In reality, the government does not own your life. The goverment does not have a right to decide what you can and cannot do. In reality, your life belongs to you. You own your life. You have a right to control your life. Whatever you do with your life, it should be your decision. You have the right to contol your own life. Your life beongs to you."

People who favor these government regulations claim that these regualtions are necessary for reasons of health and safety.
I disagree.
First of all, the classes that the woman would have had to take to get her license had NOTHING TO DO WITH HAIR BRAIDING.
Secondly, hair braiding does not pose any kind of a health risk, because NO CHEMICALS ARE USED.
Since the only thing that the woman wanted to do was to braid hair, then it makes no sense to require her to take classes on things such as makeup and manicures.
Also, all of the woman's customers were satisifed with the service that they had received. The customers were happy. They kept coming back for repeat buisness.
But see, the politicians don't want this woman to be a successful business owner. Instead, the politicians would prefer that this woman was on welfare.
