05/29/1999: Do you have any idea

How many articles I've read profiling many of the "homeless" I see on the street? Hell, I've read TWO that were about a couple of the guys I see on the street admitting that they pull down about 30K or more a year with their begging. And yes, the shelters do kick you out for the day, but my ass is kicked out of my house every day for 12 hours while I work and drive to and from work, so why should they get to hang out in a shelter all day and not have to find work? I said it before, there are people who genuinely need help from the system, and there are people who are able bodied and sucking off the government tit.

You have to sacrifice your pride and dignity to go on welfare? Tough - I had to sacrifice my pride to work in a sleazy bar to pay for my college education. Cry me a river - if you're able bodied you've got noone to blame but yourself for giving up your dignity in favor of a check. And although you've bettered yourself by overcoming serious issues in your life, Metanoia, why should I or anyone have to be more generous to people who made shitty life decisions? I had just as much option to make those choices as anyone, but I didn't. I chose instead to be productive and responsible. Why is it my responsibility to help take care of those who chose not to take the better path?

I've already qualified my statements previously by saying that I do believe there are some people genuinely in need. Those are not the people I'm talking about, and I don't believe that the people I see on the street outside my office are those people. I feel for those who have hit hardship, but my taxes are paying for services to take care of them. I don't feel like I should be hit on for more money.

The state of Wisconsin instituted a policy that welfare recipients would have to take jobs to get their welfare checks. They were offered decent positions, at places like UPS. The welfare rolls decreased by about 50%, because people opted to not work.
