12/27/02: Was Spielberg taking a shot at his critics with all those guns?

...okay, so Spielberg took a lot of heat for digitally removing all the guns from E.T. and replacing them with walkie-talkies, right?

Anyone else get the sense that he was taking a shot at his critics with all those close-ups and framed shots that focused on the pistols in the FBI agents' hands??
