unless you're making a vehicle movie for Julia Roberts, shallow=bad. Give me a riveting film like City on Fire and tons of acting talent and I can make a subpar ripoff without too much trouble, too. Let me borrow liberally - oops, I mean, let me "be derivative" of Goddard and other more talented directors and I'll make a film like Pulp Fiction for ya. Let me invoke the style of Peckinpaugh and I'll give you all the explicit violence you could ever want. Being copied doesn't make Tarentino a great director, just the opposite.
Oh, and as far as directors more influential than Tarentino over the last twenty years, here's just a few:
Robert Zemeckis: Has taken visual effects to an previously unknown level of sophistication. Granted, technology makes the gee-whiz stuff possible, but it is Zemeckis' creativity and genius that sets the standard for all other directors in its application.
Ridley Scott: He may be a "hack", but he also single- handedly changed the sci-fi genre and reintroduced the strong female lead to mainstram cinema.
Martin Scorcese: You might have heard of this guy, yes?
