The last really good movie Spielberg made was "Schindler's List", almost ten years ago. "Amistad", "The Lost World", "AI", and "Minority Report" were all disappointing on many levels. But this is Jaws/Raiders/ET man, so is it his direction that is overrated, or is it the scripts/stories/mvoies themselves that are? Is the film's success or failure (not financially) solely dependent on these people?
For my money, I suppose I'd say Fincher. I hated "Seven" and "The Game", and "Panic Room" was a letdown. And again, I don't know if it's the direction that was to blame, they all looked dark and dirty, very stylish, and it's usually the story that makes movies not work for me.
