...I guess I have to put in my two cents.
I really can't think of one, to tell you the truth. Altman gets the award for the most frustrating director, for sure. Unlike most people here, I actually liked "Gosford Park"-- too bad it came on the heels of "Dr. T," which was nothing short of cinematic dogshit. He swings for the bleachers each time, which has resulted in some real turkeys--but how can you call the man who brought us "MASH" overrated?
I'm surprised that David Lynch's name didn't come up until halfway down the thread. I thought you Lynch haters would be all over this one. I'm in the fan camp--"Blue Velvet" is simply genius.
Wes Craven certainly has developed surprising gravitas, considering his career has been devoted to lowest-common- denominator blood 'n gore.
I'm tempted to say Spike Lee, but the only film I've seen of his is "Crooklyn," which I enjoyed, but I understand to be atypical. I still remember how he spent the early 90s filling reporter's notebooks with reverse-racist drool, and that really turned me off.
