People out here get really uptight about "outsiders" mispronouncing local names. I found that out when I moved to Oregon (pronounced Ory-gun not Ory-gon). At that hellish motivational seminar piece of shit I had to attend a couple weeks ago, the MC chick misprounced the local city that one of the speakers was from which was Aloha (pronounced Uh-lo-uh not Uh-lo-ha). Immediately after she said it, you could hear 20,000 people mumble "Uh-lo-uh" under their breaths. Quite amusing...
Thank heavens I learned how to pronouce the street Couch* and the state park Champoeg** before I dared speak them aloud to anyone...
(Key: *Couch: pronounced "kooch" not, well... "couch."
**Champoeg: pronounced "shampoo-ey." No shit...)
