08/23/00: What movie was Ebert watching?

I went to see this expecting great things after hearing Ebert heap praises on it. Boy what a disappointment!! The acting was wooden, the plot insipid, and even the visuals, overrated. I'll take the visuals of the Matrix, or Dark City, or even What Dreams May Come, over the Cell any day. This movie was Hellraiser, meets the Matrix, meets 2001 a Space Oddity, meets What Dreams May Come meets, an MTV video. And you call this original?? Tarsem? Maybe he can take a few lessons from Lynch or Cronenberg on how to make an original film with the right blend of sex, symbolism, and gore.
