What can I say? I dug it. A pretty movie, the prettiest I've ever seen I believe. Whoever did the cinematography on this thing is the king. I can't say that the movie worked for me on an emotional level, but I could understand it; everything fit into place as far as I'm concerned. You know the different forms of D'Onofrio's character as child, lord, and present day, and the accompanying shifts in art direction? Like when he's a child, everything becomes huge and imposing, even stairs, and his house is shown as this small enclosing structure? That's brilliant. The vistas are the most stunning I've seen in a movie, and the way the set will shift depending on his psychological being, that's brilliant too. The acting was decent, the story was ok, mainly the reasons people put forth for it being bad are...
Unrealistic/tasteless/predictable. D'Onofrio's character isn't unrealistic. All serial killings except for a small segment of nurse related ones are sexual in motivation, people just don't like to talk about that part of it. The serial killer is the modern folk hero of America, sent forth with an undefined mission to kill. People like characters like Hannibal or American Psycho, suave genius types unfathomably evil, but the truth is it's stupid. Hannibal is a stupid character, because he's the one that's unrealistic. Serial killers are frustrated perverts, and pretty much a bunch of not very intelligent losers. Don't be so impressed by numbers. It's very hard to catch serial killers like other killers because there's no linking motivation, it's not like the 98% of passionate killings that can be solved in 2 hours once all the family members are interviewed. I sometimes think I could be the greatest serial killer ever if inclined, and so could you. But back at the ranch, hanging from the ceiling and jacking off to bleached bodies isn't farfetched once you read some of the amazingly fucked up things these guys do. And severe child abuse teamed up with a rare form of schizophrenia is just what the doctor ordered to get someone that fucked up. People say child abuse is predictable, but really, it irritates me, because that's where it all begins. This mission from the womb to kill thing like Hannibal is BS. People need to stop acting so incredibly herdlike. Anyway, I'm not going to go into a whole thing about serial killing since this forum is practically dead, maybe next time, moving on.
Well that's all I've seen really on the bashing side. Really, i think this is just like Event Horizon, people are so shocked that they display this sort of Pavlovian reactionary lashing out to alien values, they refuse to see the skill that went into the movie, and would prefer some predigested formula for the masses like Silence of the Lambs.
My complaint is that Jennifer Lopez didn't look that hot in this movie, especially with those bangs. She looked like one of those whores in Tijuana when my church dragged me down there to convert Mexicans. Man, did that suck. You don't know what pestilence means until you've seen one of the insane swarms of flies down there. They made us do all this manual labour for the Mexicans as a sign of our humility and to gain trust, for my part I don't think the mexicans cared and thought we were a bunch of stupid gringos. I can't believe that air can hold so much dust. I like the old way of converting people, with guns.
Anyway, I liked it! It's a pretty movie, go see it, you'll be entertained.
