Well, I must agree with Mr. Cranky with this one -- for the most part. Great effects, bad acting, and a horrible storyline that, given a revised and longer script - as well as another year or so in the works - it could have gone somewhere. The concept is cool, and I think that's what you're getting at.
Of note: the flowery stuff that borders the screen around Lopez while in her own mind state is there because she took on a familiar character for Carl (as a boy) to be comfortable with, i.e., that Virgin mary-esque maiden from his bookmark that she found in the experimental room. The gold "trim," if you will, was around the border of that bookmark, and that is why Lopez' character used the additional flowery effect in her mind state.
