Last Saturday evening, my husband suggested that we see a movie... We are not habitues of that genre, opting more frequently for the tamer entertainment of opera, concert (early music, in particular) or serious theater. Be that as it may, my husband noticed that "The Cell" received FOUR (yes, count them) stars, and suggested that we see the film.
I must tell you that never in all the years of moviegoing (even as infrequently as we have engaged ourselves in this form of entertainment) have I wanted to get up and RUN, not WALK out of a theater as I wished to do on Saturday evening. Your "entertainment" was the lowest point in perversity, sadomachism, graphic psychotic behavior and mysogyny that has ever been portrayed on the screen. Entertaining -- hell, no; this was stressful and most disturbing -- there were times when I could not bring myself to set eyes on the screen.
Believe me, I am not a prude, but with the many kinds of hate crimes and crimes against women occurring in real life today, I wonder what redeeming value this film really has. Is it so necessary for the public to be exposed to this kind of horror? To whom are you adressing this kind of movie? It is obviously targeted toward an adult audience... Are you assuming that the majority of adults have an interest in such gross portrayals? Really, gentlemen, money isn't everything. Standards of quality, values of decency, and entertainment that is edifying would probably bring you greater reward than this play upon the dark, vicarious desires of a minority of people who get their kicks from watching such unredeeming trash. Oh, the cinematography was incredibly good, and the special effects were really glitzy.... But the story was abominable -- a vortex of horror and violence.
I would hope that others will give feedback decrying this genre of film, and that future films of this nature will be boycotted for their unredeeming value. This is not art, gentlemen, nor is it really entertainment... it constitutes very expensive trash.
