06/08/03: The truth on dance....

Posted By: Bubble

I am a ballet student and here's what i have to say: First off - Dancing is not just Dancing in this movie! Its ballet! Ballet is not hip hop, it takes YEARS and years to learn how to do a single step properly. Dancers work their asses off for over 40 hours a week plus rehearsals. They wear pointe shoes that make their toes bleed, they get calluses and blisters but they still have to perform. Dancers are so comitted that even if a family member dies, they have to go on stage and perform with a smile that very same day. Dancers go to class everyday, and students like me are pressured to have perfect turnout and the leg strength to get my our legs 180 degrees to the side easily and gracefully. We deal with pain and rejection as part of our daily lives. We are hardworkers who never give up. Regarding the male dancers: not all male dancers a gay. This is a stereotype, a big stereotype. I have met a few male dancers and there is a male dancer in one of my classes. They are not all gay, and i know this for a fact. Dancing takes more physical strength than any other sport. Did you know that professional football players take ballet? You probably didnt, because from everyones attitudes towards the movie you make it sound like guy dancers are gay and weak. Not only do football players take ballet, but surfers do also. Why? Because it helps with balance, coordination and strength! As for all dancers being anorexic: First of all, do NOT throw the word around like its a common cold. Anorexia nervosa or bulemia is a serious eating disorder. Not all dancers are anorexic, because many of us students and dancers know that while it makes us skinnier it makes us weaker and we want strength, not be weak. We know more about anorexia than you guys will probably ever know. So since we dont want to be anorexic we eat healthy, which makes us skinny. We still eat and we do not throw up afetrwards. We just eat healthy, like fruit instead of chips and cookies. The reason some dancers DO become anorexic because dancers and students are constantly pressured to stay thin to compare to George Balanchines ideal body type. Dance cause physical and mental stress and pressure sometimes, and dancers can develop an eating disorder because of this. Just because we have good bodies doesnt mean we are anorexic. The bottom line is dancers are hardworkers who strive to perfect their technique. We, students, and even professional dancers take class every day to try to perfect something, that may never be perfect. We have strength, grace and flexibility. If understood these concepts you would actually appreciate the movie.
