When I read the rewiew, I found the obvious critics made a an American who obviously knows very little of Brazilian culture. When you say that the guy who killed Josue's mom should be doing community service, etc etc, and that the boy is insensitive, you don't put in mind the different reality of the movie's context: an extremely unfair country, where the majority of the population is VERY poor (you wouldn't believe the conditions they live on), where Justive is nothing but a decadent institution. Josue is used to that. He is used to pain, to hunger, to suffering. He's already emotionally experient enough to handle w/ his mother's death like that. And after a entire day just lying around the station, he's hungry, for Christ sake! Also, go visit one or two really poor places, towns with 1,000 inhabittants, where the majority of the population in illeterate, soh you can see why they aren't all the same. I could go on and on, but it can all me summed up in one thing: until you know Brazil's culture a little better, don't try to analyze this kind of movie, where totally differente realities are shown. For as long as you idea of Brazil is restrained to Brazilian nuts, Carnival and Pelé, (not to mention your idea of other cultures) well, grab your cheeseburger and go watch your superbowl: you're just another average American guy, whether you like it or not.
