That nasty drug for pregnant women was thalidomide. It was never released in the united states because it hadn't passed FDA screening before the problems showed up.
All drugs have side effects. It boils down Usually it's the disease. As for those implants, you've got me there. Devices are regulated differently than drugs, and I don't know much about them.
Finally, it's a lot harder to fake data than you'd imagine. In physics class, you know what the answer should be, and the harried grad student who grades your lab isn't going to spend a lot of time checking up on you. In science, if you come up with the type of breakthrough we've been speculating on, there will be a lot of people checking up on you.
