Someone pointed out that a prime motivation for cheating is to attain a degree or a grant. This is probably true. However, it is perfectly acceptable to negative data, that is, data that disproves a hypothesis. Showing that an avenue of inquiry is a dead end is still a valuable service, and many degrees are granted to people whose dissertations are almost entirely negative.

Getting back to basics, it was never my intention to claim that cheating never occurs, or that cheaters always get caught. I will say again that unethical behavior on the scale of "Coma" would be extremely difficult, if not impossible.
