11/03/96: Rotten Tomatoes

Posted By: Bunyip

Hi foodies

Living in a temparate climate, I like to grow my own tomatoes of course. Pot plants grow wild on the railway lines and in the national parks, if you know where to look...

If you have ever eaten home grown produce, you will know why they specifically want to fiddle with tomatoes. The average supermarket tomato tastes more like a particularily bland cucumber and to make matters worse, has a similar texture. The real thing is vastly superior. The same goes for stone fruit in my experience. I really don't like peaches green and crunchy as they are presented in your average Canadian supermarket.

Some things are better from the supermarket, specifically broccoli, as it is far less likely to be high-protein (have aphids in it). But if I find a bug on my food I figure, as long as I don't eat the bug, it is far less likely to kill me than a sprayed-to-death bug-free vegie.
