Mind if I jump in?
I work for a small (compared to Merck) Pharmaceutical company - actually it's a "Biotech" company. I agree that unethical research takes place - but not so much in that it exploits human subjects - but that it involves repeating research needlessly in order to get "me too" drugs approved. I'd like to see more research dollars go towards new applications for established compounds as well as to finding new compounds Vs. running trials designed to prove that "my drug is just as effective as yours and is perhaps a little more convenient". Not to say I'm against healthy competition - I just think that there is a better balance to be achieved.
Teddybear's last post reminded my of the film, Jesus of Montreal. In the last scenes, they distribute the organs of the Jesus figure to those awaiting transplant - it was really beautiful. On the other hand - I'm not sure I would want Ted Bundy's eyes. I wonder if Evil and Love are contagious???
