I mean yes, it was unquestionably a bad Jaws ripoff. But that was the whole point. The whole opening scene with the yuppies on the catamaran is a homage to Jaws. The movie was never meant to be taken seriously. And for what it is, it's amazingly entertaining. Some people seem to have a problem because it isn't some high-faultian, intellectual thing... it's not supposed to be! It's supposed to be, a buncha super-smart sharks chomp on dumb people! You're supposed to root for the sharks in this movie!
