I could go on forever about Sailor Moon's greatness, but in a nutshell here it is:
1. Gorgeous f/x and costumes
2. Well-developed characters with strong likes and dislikes
and definite dreams, goals, strengths, and weaknesses that
you can relate to (my personal favs are Mercury, Neptune,
and Jupiter, although I like all the other sailors except
that irritating bawlbaby Sailor Moon, the bland and ditzy
Sailor Venus, and the bitchy Sailor Mars).
3. Original plot
4. Villians that aren't just cardboard representations of
evil (except for say, Queen Beryl or Wiseman)
5. Strong girl-power theme
6. The manga is totally awesome
7. It takes on so many issues: Homosexuality, small
children's (and not-so-small children's) fears, romantic
insecurities, body insecurities, sex, desire to succeed in
school (or in Usagi's case, lack thereof), etc.
8. AREN'T THE PROCEEDING REASONS GOOD ENOUGH, DAMMIT!?
I also think "Voltron" is seriously underrated and also it for the quality of the animation (when it isn't second-grade level shit, that is) and the characterization--feel free to disagree with me, however!
