...there's been a whole lot of sexual and scatilogical content in anime throughout the years-the subjects aren't taboo the way that they were until fairly recently in American toons.
Dubs, subs, as far as I'm concerned, I'm for anything that popularizes the medium. If that means that they take liberties initially so as to get us introduced to shows and movies, that's cool.
I own a copy of "Warriors of the Wind", a gutted version of "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind"-even with story and character elements viciously edited out (to the tune of about 20 or so minutes), it still holds up. I got to see it uneditied on the big screen at the Freer Gallery in DC. IT WAS INCREDIBLE. I'm still glad that I was introduced to it about a decade ago.
The manga has some significant differences, however...
