REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA. It's about a teenage schoolgirl who met a prince when she was little and decided she wanted to become a prince too, so she dresses like a boy. She gets into swordfights and ends up "engaged" to a mysterious girl called Anthy. Lots of rose imagery. Literal-minded Westerners will see lesbian overtones in all this, but I prefer to look at it in terms of little girls doing role- playing. So far they've translated 13 of the 39 episodes, and I can't wait for them to do the rest.
I recently saw a movie of the series, called ADOLESCENCE MOKUSHIRYOKU, the latter word being Japanese for "apocalypse." (The show's catchphrase is "The absolute destiny apocalypse." Beats "Gotta catch 'em all!") I thought it was a mess, but maybe it works better if you've seen the whole series.
