01/15/08: Sevastopol

Posted by: Dano

Yes, Sevastopol is a warm water port and the Turks (who traditionally HATE the Russians) had not blocked them from the Med. That said, it would have been very easy for the Turks (a NATO ally stationing US forces) to do so at any time they wanted. The Soviets didn't want to have to rely on the continued good will of their hated enemies.

I don't say this to defend the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, or the Soviets at all for any reason for that matter, but they were looking to get one step closer to a warm water port when they invaded Afghanistan. It was a stepping stone to Pakistan.

Great review, Dan. Someday I'll get back to the movies and join in the fun again!
