01/10/08: Brass Balls

Posted by: scarlet_ohara

A little info bit:

The phrase: "it's cold enough in here to freeze the balls off of a brass monkey"

actually isn't a dirty as it sounds. It refers to the days of sailing ships, in which cannon balls used to be bothersome as they rolled around the deck of the ship, so a contraption was built to hold the balls, with slight indents so they could be grabbed easily in case of emergency battle. The contraption was made of wood, or brass. Brass, unfortunately, expands and contracts with heat changes, therefore when the ship was sailing to a cold destination, off the balls would roll.
