05/29/97: Re: Alyssa is not a lesbian.

I agree that for me, at least, the emotional tag of the film was not that Alyssa was a lesbian (and I agree she was open to trying out almost everything), but was one has to look at, analyze, and think about who your partner is, what makes her "tick", and whether you can meld into a couple. The movie probably spoke more to me, because she reminds me a lot of a former girlfriend who challenged me and my neat, concise, view of relationships. She always kept me off-balance, and made me think a lot about what relationships are, how much one gives up, and how much work they sometimes take. I don't think men marry women like Alyssa. She's a challenge, and most men, like me, want to come home, relax, and not have to be challenged every day concerning relationships. We love these women, and find them exciting, but we don't marry them. As Billy Joel says, we don't want to have to work that hard.
